What is BMP Infuse® Bone Graft?

Infuse® Bone Graft is a bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) graft which stimulates the growth of bone in places, such as the jaw, that have little bone density. Bone density is very important to the structure and success of dental implants. Some people naturally have adequate bone density to be able to sustain the screws and supports that are required for dental implants, but many people do not have adequate bone density for this procedure.

For those people who need higher bone density in their jaw to sustain dental implants, our oral surgeons at Staten Island Oral Surgery offer BMP Infuse® Bone Graft in New York City as an option available instead of traditional bone grafting to build more bone on the jaw for dental implants in NYC.

BMP Infuse® Bone Graft in NY is a less invasive option for people who need bone grafting. The traditional method of bone grafting involves either grafting bone from other parts of the body, or using processed cadaver.

BMP is a protein that stimulates the body to produce new bone. After 4 to 9 months, once the bone graft has healed, dental implants will be inserted.  When BMP is used in sinus grafts or jaw reconstruction, implants can be placed in 6-9 months.  After the BMP Infuse® Bone Graft is placed in the jaw, patients will have to wait for bone to grow before dental implants can be considered, but BMP Infuse®allows the body to make new bone using stem cell technology.

BMP Infuse® Bone Graft is comprised of two main active ingredients, the protein that stimulates bone growth and the collagen sponge. The collagen sponge releases the protein over time and acts as a mold for new bone growth to form against. Eventually, the collagen sponge will be absorbed into the body, and new, dense, natural bone will remain. The specific protein used in BMP Infuse® Bone Graft in New York is rhBMP-2, which is a synthesized version of a natural protein found in the body. Once sufficient bone has grown in the needed sites of the jaw, our dental implant specialists may then insert dental implants. Dental implants are a permanent solution to missing teeth, and building sufficient bone density, whether through BMP Infuse® Bone Graft or bone grafting, may be necessary. Our oral surgeons will discuss which method of building bone density is best for you during your personal consultation.
